Microchip Technology Inc. announced today the acquisition of edge AI chip startup Hailo, marking its biggest move into artificial intelligence hardware. The all-cash deal, terms undisclosed, brings Hailo’s high-performance, low-power neural network processors into Microchip’s embedded systems portfolio, targeting industrial, automotive, and IoT markets. The acquisition positions Microchip to compete directly with Nvidia’s Jetson and other edge AI platforms.
Hailo, founded in 2017, has developed specialized AI processors that deliver high throughput with low power consumption, ideal for edge applications like smart cameras, autonomous vehicles, and industrial robotics. Its Hailo-8 and Hailo-15 chips are already deployed in various smart city and automotive vision systems. By integrating Hailo’s technology, Microchip can offer a complete solution combining its microcontrollers and FPGAs with AI acceleration, creating a compelling offering for OEMs designing next-generation intelligent devices.
For electronics engineers and PCB designers, this acquisition signals a new wave of highly integrated, AI-capable components that simplify board design and reduce time-to-market. Hailo’s chiplet architecture allows flexible integration into multi-layer PCBs and HDI PCBs, supporting advanced designs like multilayer PCB boards, rigid-flex PCB, and IC substrate PCBs. As AI moves to the edge, demand for specialized PCBs with higher density and thermal management will rise, benefiting manufacturers who can deliver HDI any layer and heavy copper PCBs.
As a provider of advanced PCB solutions, LT CIRCUIT offers HDI PCB boards, multilayer PCB boards, and rigid-flex PCBs ideal for embedding edge AI chips like Hailo’s. With expertise in high-density interconnects and thermal management, LT CIRCUIT supports the complex PCB requirements of next-generation AI-driven devices.
