MLCC Supply Risks Push OEMs to Diversify Capacitor Sourcing

Electronics OEMs are rethinking capacitor sourcing as supply volatility and MLCC shortages resurface, EE Times reports. Procurement teams across automotive, 5G, and industrial electronics are moving beyond single-source strategies, adding qualified alternate suppliers and longer-term agreements to keep production lines running.

Capacitor demand from EV powertrains, 5G base stations, and AI server boards is outpacing supply for high-capacitance MLCCs and polymer capacitors. Lead times for some commercial and automotive-grade parts have stretched past 20 weeks, and suppliers in Japan and Taiwan are allocating output. This tightness echoes earlier chip shortages, pushing OEMs to treat passive components as strategic, not commodity, buys. Buyers are now auditing supplier financial health, fab utilization, and geographic risk, not just unit price.

To build resilience, manufacturers are qualifying dual sources for every capacitor BOM line, increasing safety stock, and shifting some procurement to regional suppliers in Southeast Asia and Mexico. PCB assembly partners are also being asked to provide real-time component availability dashboards and recommend pin-compatible alternates before production. This shift reduces line-down risk and can speed NPI cycles for high-mix PCB assembly. For high-reliability boards in automotive and power electronics, process traceability and AEC-Q200 qualification are becoming non-negotiable in supplier scorecards.
