Nidec Redesigns Gears for Humanoid Robots, Aims for Zero Backlash

Nidec Corporation is rethinking gearbox design to overcome performance barriers in humanoid and mobile robots, announcing new actuator technologies that target zero backlash and reduced weight. Humanoid robots like Tesla’s Optimus require precise, lightweight joints that can deliver high torque without play. Nidec’s engineering team is tackling the tradeoffs between gear strength, backlash, and size by developing integrated strain wave gears and compact cycloidal drives. These designs aim to replace heavier conventional gearboxes, enabling nimbler motion and longer battery life.
