Tesla/BYD Record EV Ramp Pressures Automotive PCB Capacity

Tesla and BYD are pushing EV output to record highs, tightening global supply of automotive-grade PCBs heading into 2025. With BYD selling more than 400,000 NEVs monthly and Tesla delivering over 460,000 vehicles in Q3 2024, demand for high-reliability multilayer, heavy copper, and thermal-management boards is outstripping available qualified capacity.

The shift to 800V architectures is a core driver. Each EV now uses two to three times more PCB area than a comparable combustion vehicle, concentrated in battery management systems, onboard chargers, DC-DC converters, and traction inverters. These applications demand heavy copper (up to 10 oz) for high-current paths, ceramic-filled substrates for thermal dissipation, and high-Tg laminates that survive under-hood temperatures. PCB fabricators with automotive qualification (IATF 16949) are seeing lead times stretch from 8 to 12 weeks, and spot capacity for specialized materials is nearly sold out through mid-2025.

Capacity expansion is underway, but qualification cycles are slow. Major Chinese and Taiwanese PCB makers have announced new lines for automotive powertrain boards, while some Tier-1 suppliers are dual-sourcing in Southeast Asia. However, automotive-grade PCB qualification takes 12–18 months, so near-term relief is limited. This is pushing OEMs to redesign boards with embedded components and rigid-flex sections to reduce layer counts, and to secure allocation agreements with fabricators. For buyers, the message is clear: lock in capacity now for 2025 EV programs or face production delays.

At LT CIRCUIT, we are seeing a sharp rise in RFQs for heavy copper and ceramic PCBs tied to EV powertrain and battery management. Our IATF 16949-aligned production and in-house thermal testing support quick-turn prototypes for high-current, high-reliability applications.
