Selecting the optimal panelization method is a critical decision in PCB design. The choice between V-cut (V-scoring) and mouse bite (tab routing) directly impacts manufacturing cost, production speed, and board quality. This article examines both techniques, their advantages and limitations, and provides guidance for choosing the best approach for your project.
V-cut, also known as V-scoring, creates V-shaped grooves on the top and bottom sides of a PCB panel. These grooves leave a thin connecting layer that holds individual boards together until they are snapped apart. Standard scoring angles are 45° or 60°. The method is highly efficient for rectangular panels where boards can be placed with zero spacing, maximizing material utilization.
Mouse bite panelization uses small perforated holes (0.5–0.8 mm diameter) spaced 0.25–0.5 mm apart along the board outline. These perforations create weak points that allow manual snapping after assembly. Tabs are typically 2–5 mm wide. This method is ideal for non-rectangular boards or designs with components near the edge.
For complex designs, engineers often combine V-cut and mouse bite on the same panel. V-cut is applied to straight sides for efficient material use, while mouse bites are used on curved sections or near sensitive components. This hybrid method maintains panel rigidity during SMT assembly and accommodates irregular board features.
Rectangular, thicker boards favor V-cut; irregular or thin boards favor mouse bite.
If components are densely packed near the edge, mouse bite minimizes stress-induced damage during depaneling.
For automated SMT lines, V-cut panels are easier to feed and handle. Mouse bite panels may require extra care to avoid flexing.
