Wave soldering is a proven technique for mass production of through-hole components. The process involves passing the bottom of a PCB over a standing wave of molten solder, which simultaneously solders all exposed leads and pads. This method is highly automated, delivering consistent results at a fast pace.
The wave soldering process consists of three main steps: flux application, preheating, and soldering. First, flux is sprayed onto the entire bottom side of the board to remove oxides and promote wetting. The board is then preheated to activate the flux and reduce thermal shock. Finally, the board travels over a wave of molten solder (typically 245–265°C), creating solder joints as it passes. After cooling, the joints solidify, completing the assembly.
Wave soldering is best suited for high-volume production of simple through-hole boards where cost per unit is the primary concern.
Selective soldering is a targeted approach that applies solder only to specific joints, leaving the rest of the board untouched. This method uses a programmable nozzle to deliver solder precisely where needed, making it ideal for complex or mixed-technology PCBs.
The process begins with precision flux application—typically drop-jet or micro-spray—to just the solder joints. Localized preheating then raises the temperature of the targeted area (80–110°C). A small nozzle contacts each pad, delivering molten solder for 2–5 seconds before retracting. The machine then moves to the next programmed point, repeating the sequence until all required joints are soldered.
Selective soldering is ideal for low-to-medium volume runs, prototype builds, and boards with sensitive components or complex layouts.
